During the week the children from Nursery to Year 2, took part in many different activities throughout their classes such as singing number rhymes, making repeating patterns, looking at 2D and 3D shapes, looking at the different weights of items, and challenges involving place value and money.

The children have also been enjoying taking part in a new program called Mastering Number which the school adopted at the beginning of the Autumn Term.

This program helps children to develop their fluency within numbers allowing them to see the many different ways numbers are made up, the patterns within them, and the numbers bonds that they share.

One of the main resources for this program is the Rekenrek this piece of equipment can help children move away from counting in ones to start doing basic mental calculations.

This is what is called this ‘number sense’, and research tells us that if children develop fluency and flexibility with number facts and relationships early on, they will make much more progress later, in both maths and other subjects.

Sarah Martin, a parent, said: "It was lovely to be welcomed into school and it gave a great insight into the kind of maths activities the children are working on."

The conclusion to the Maths Week was to have a parental involvement afternoon. Where the parents would be able to come into their child’s classroom and complete mathematical tasks with their children.

A spokesperson from Kells Infant School said: "This was a huge success with at least 3/4 of parents or carers attending to support their children with maths.

"It was fantastic for us as a school as it shows the supports our parents and carers have for their child’s education especially within maths. We are hoping that our next maths week will be just as successful."
