MANY residents of Whitehaven may have noticed slight road disruptions and on-going work as faster broadband is being installed.

And they may have noticed that other Cumbrian towns such as Aspatria and Workington are already benefiting from the fibre broadband supplied by Fibrus.

Following the work in Whitehaven residents can expect to get fibre broadband next year.

It will be the latest stage of the Fibrus roll out which was announced in late 2022 when it was draftawarded the UK government’s Project Gigabit contract for Cumbria to support 60,000 premises.

Fibrus are currently rolling out the build in Whitehaven with the aim to have over 10,000 homes go live in 2024 with additional coverage ongoing.

Fibrus spokesperson said: "Around 60,000 premises in Cumbria will be connected to full fibre broadband thanks to Fibrus in the coming years. Gigabit-capable networks are fast and fit for the future, allowing users to work, stream and scroll online without the battle for bandwidth or disruption often experienced with ageing networks. "

Whitehaven residents who register their interest on Fibrus.com will be emailed with updates when possible

Part of the levelling up the UK economy plans, focus on the importance of digital connectivity which is why Fibrus’ launch is particularly focused on areas that have traditionally been poorly served by broadband in the north of England. With that in mind, residents of Cumbria will benefit from a faster, more reliable and more affordable network.

This hyperfast broadband will bring residents in Cumbria’s rural towns and villages a transformative new service they can rely on, for the first time. Further supporting the community, the expansion is set to create over 200 jobs across Cumbria.

Dean Jooste, Stakeholder Director at Fibrus, said: “Fibrus aims to enhance the lives of residents and businesses in areas like west Cumbria, who have long experienced limited connectivity options.

"This is completely transforming their everyday lives and allowing families, businesses, and local people to be able to work from home.”

He added: “Fibrus will continue to address the digital imbalance in rural connectivity and we look forward to seeing more communities enjoying the benefits of our full-fibre network.”

Fibrus has also been active in supporting Cumbrian communities with a £60,000 fund to support community groups as well as a Play if Forward scheme to support grassroots sport. It has also sponsored a new Fibrus 100 league for girls' cricket and invested in Workington Town Rugby League who now play at the renamed Fibrus Community Stadium.
