This week people from across Cumbria and Lancashire gathered at St Mary's Church in Cleator for the annual pilgrimage.

On Sunday, September 10, the church was filled with crowds of people who had all come to take part in the exceptional service.

Typically, the service is held in the church's Grotto, which is a replica of the Grotto seen at Lourdes in France, but due to bad weather, it was decided that the service would be moved inside.

Last year the pilgrimage had to be cut short due to poor weather so the priests and bishop were careful not to let the weather spoil the service in 2023.

A spokesperson from St Mary's Church said: "Since the Grotto was opened in 1927 it has been the focus of devotion and pilgrimage.

"We continue to promote and honour this special place and pray that it will hold a place in the hearts of faithful pilgrims for generations to come."

The service was led through with a number of hymns and prayers and towards the end those present were invited to the front of the church to receive communion.

The service was led by bishop Paul Swarbrick with help from father Paul, the parish priest, and a number of other priests.

Almost 100 years ago there were high rates of unemployment in Cleator Moor.

The priest who served at the time, father Clayton, bought land that was adjoining the church and asked for volunteers from the town to help with building the Grotto.

The volunteers were paid in vouchers for food and clothing.

Since it was opened in 1927 it has become a focus point of pilgrimage for all those dedicated to the catholic faith.

The church itself has seen lots of celebration as of late, particularly in 2022 when it celebrated its 150th anniversary.

A number of events were organised to celebrate the occasion including an art exhibition and flower festival.
