IN this edition of nostalgia, we have delved into our archives to pull together a gallery of the old shops and businesses in our area.

These photos show shops and business that have since closed on Whitehaven's high street. There are plenty of businesses which we have waved goodbye to over the years, including ones not mentioned on the list.

Some of the newer businesses people will be able to remember may include Woolworths, Blockbuster, Ethel Austen, Homeflair, Thorntons, Evans and Lakeland Dry Cleaners.

The first photo on the list is taken from the 1969 road race around Whitehaven, however, today we focus on the buildings in the back such as the Auto Bank and the Midland Bank. There is also another business with 'Gas' written on the board. All three businesses have since closed, including the Natwest Bank featured further up on the photograph.

As mentioned, some of the more modern shops featured include Woolworths or Woolies, the shop that seemingoly sold everything you could have ever wanted. It was a great miss when it was annouced in 2008 it would close.

Nearly 270 Cumbrian Woolworths workers faced a bleak Christmas after administrators confirmed all its stricken stores would close in the 2009 New Year.

Whitehaven, Workington, Carlisle and Penrith were amongst the first 206 to close their doors.

Blockbuster is another missed shop. Whilst we can easily access films online now, going to Blockbuster was apart of the experience itself. The shop closed in November 2013 after 24 years of trading in the town.

It had located the prominent site on the corner of King Street and Duke Street since it opened in 1989.
