For today's Nostalgia edition we will be taking a look back at the year 1990.

Over thirty years later and things are looking quite a bit different than they were all those years ago.

It is truly amazing to see just how much things have changed over those three decades, however just like today there seemed to be an awful lot going on.

This was a time when East and West Germany reunited, the channel tunnel between France and England connected together and the first in-car Satellite Navigation System went on sale.

It was also a time when opposition parties in South Africa were legalized and Nelson Mandella was released from prison becoming leader of the African National Congress, the Ulysses space craft was launched in 1990 and was a joint effort between the ESA and NASA and the Leaning Tower of Pisa was closed to the public due to safety concerns of it falling over.

There was also all kinds of things happening back here in Whitehaven too. Here at The Whitehaven News we've searched through our archives to find some of the most fascinating photos from this time. So please enjoy this little bit of nostalgia with us.

We can see the ancient Lammas Fair proclamtion being read by local solicitor Bill Gough at Whitehaven Market Place, a number of photos of the Whitehaven Carnival which took place in August of 1990 and a couple of photos of the Christmas lights switch on which took place in the town that year.

Other photos show youngsters enjoying the fun at Castle Park and people taking part in the ninth Cumbrian run.
