THIS week Whitehaven took on Workington Town in the Ike Southward Memorial trophy.

A minute's silence was held during the game to remember Logan Holgate, a young man who played for Hensingham ARLFC, who tragically passed away last week aged 18.

A collection bucket was passed around the fans, raising £3,500.

In the pre-season match itself, Whitehaven were triumphant, defeating Workington by 22-6.

This was a great pre-season win for the side and helped them regain bragging rights over Workington, after losing the game last year.

Head coach, Jonty Gorley, said: "It was a typical first game, in the first half we didn't play the best and I thought Workington played quite well.

"But considering the pre-season we had and the amount of new faces in the team, it went well.

"One of our side hadn't even trained with us yet but turned up and played on Sunday. I think we finished the game really well and did a good job. We got some good breaks and tries in there and that's how we want to play.

"Considering it was the first hit out in the pre season, I thought the lads did well and defensively throughout the game I thought we were good.

"There's a lot of work to do and to get up to speed but it wasn't bad for the first game.

"It was good to get a win especially in the Ike Southward Trophy but pre season is just an extension of training. But you're still under pressure and need to achieve.

"It's great to win but I also want to get something out of these games and fine tune how we play."

Whitehaven will be playing against Wigan Warriors this Sunday which will be a bigger challenge for the side.
