A social impact programme is delivering remarkable results - with millions of pounds invested into the west Cumbrian community.

Sellafield Ltd’s SiX programme – which represents social impact, multiplied - prioritises projects co-created with the community and stakeholders.

It recognises that more can be achieved in partnership and that impact can be multiplied through collaboration.

All of the projects under the SiX banner are collaborations funded by Sellafield and the NDA.

Over the last few years, more than £40m has been invested into projects in West Cumbria.

Working with BEC, Sellafield invested £5.6m to deliver the Bus Station development while also entering into a partnership with Barclays Eagle Labs to grow local businesses and entrepreneurs.

In partnership with Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, Sellafield has invested £2m in ‘The Edge’ - a new activity centre on the town’s harbour.

The architecturally iconic building will provide jobs, growth and a major boost for the tourism industry.

In Cleator Moor, Sellafield has been working with Copeland Council and other partners to develop plans for the Leconfield industrial estate.

Sellafield and the NDA have invested more than £1.5m to date in laying the foundations for an industrial services hub.

This is a central part of the town deal – leveraging in more than £20m in additional investment.

It is designed to better help deliver work on the Sellafield site, while driving innovation, collaboration and growth in the supply chain and elsewhere.

In Egremont, Sellafield is working with Copeland Council and Cumbria County Council to bring ideas and investments forward and in Millom, Sellafield and the NDA are investing to create an agile working hub for more than 100 nuclear workers.

Sellafield and the NDA were already a sponsor of the West Lakes Academy and the school has been a huge success.

By investing £10m into Campus Whitehaven, Sellafield was able to help leverage in excess of a further £20m, working with Cumbria County Council to deliver the largest schools investment in Whitehaven for more than half a century.

On top of this, £1.75m is invested each year into the WELL project (Western Excellence in Leadership & Learning) to improve educational attainment in every school in west Cumbria, particularly for those pupils most in need.

And the work does not stop with physical investments. Sellafield is also working with Cumbria Community Foundation (CCF) to invest more than £4m in the ‘Transforming West Cumbria’ initiative.

The scheme supports families, funds financial education, nurtures young entrepreneurs and funds community and voluntary groups.

It has been developed to address issues identified in CCF’s West Cumbria: Opportunities and Challenges report.

Jamie Reed, head of corporate affairs at Sellafield Ltd, said: “Right now, we’re amongst the leading national organisations that understand and deliver greater social impact and value from their work and we’re only at the beginning of the process.

“Whether with our local authorities, BEC, the harbour commissioners or CCF, we’ll continue to work with local partners to drive projects that continue to deliver success and build upon the momentum we’re generating.”
