WHITEHAVEN captain Scott McAvoy says there’s no time for his side to dwell on Sunday’s disappointing derby defeat to Workington Town.

Haven were handed their fifth straight defeat at the hands of their local rivals, but remain ahead of them in the Championship table.

With just two games left to play in the regular season Haven are still in pole position in the race for eighth place and could secure it with a win over Dewsbury on Sunday if other results go their way.

“How we played on Sunday isn’t our style at all, we were outplayed,” McAvoy said.

“We didn’t get into our own shapes or react.

“We definitely still have it in us to get eighth spot, it’s just getting over the defeat to Town but we don’t have time to dwell on it.

“We played within ourselves and we need to fix that.

“We know where we went wrong and we’ll work on that this week.

“Dewsbury are on a bit of a roll at the moment but we know when we turn up here we can turn anyone over.”

Haven were just 12-0 down at half-time but were unable to overcome the two-score deficit as Town added a further 16 points to their tally.

A late try from long-serving winger Craig Calvert spared Haven’s blushes as they avoided being nilled by Town for the third time in 2015.

“It’s a complete disappointment,” he added.

“To go from how we’ve been playing to what we produced on Sunday is a complete difference.

“They stuck to their system and ground us down, we didn’t know how to react and didn’t have an answer.

“We are still a bit upbeat because of where we are in the table, if we win next week it puts us in a good position again.

“It’s tight at the bottom of the table, but we felt that Sunday’s game was a chance to make a gap between us and the sides below us. We’ll be putting things right next week.

“The spirit in the camp is very good and it has improved a lot over the last three months or so.”
