A RARE old picture of Whitehaven character Geordie Mitchell a native of West Strand... or more often ‘no fixed abode’... playing his accordian on the cobbled streets of Whitehaven in the hope of a few pence.
He was a regular at the courthouse for sleeping rough but despite his life on the streets he lived until he was 80.
It seems Geordie had been in the army but didn’t care for discipline and while serving in India got himself dismissed. He returned home and managed to find an odd day’s work here and there, loading and unloading vessels at the harbour.
