Former St Bees school pupil Jen Warren is targeting personal bests and a clutch of medals at Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in Toronto.

Veteran Army Major Dr Jen Warren, who lives in Rugby, Warwickshire, with her husband Jon, from Cockermouth, will be vice-captain of the UK squad and is set to fly out to Canada today ahead of the games.

She will compete in two cycling events, three swimming events and four athletics events as she tries to match or better the nine medals she won in last year’s competition.

“I think last year I was quite fearful and this time I’m just looking forward to getting out there,” she said.

“I haven’t really set any targets but I’d like to do as well as I did last year if not better.

“My aim is to do a personal best across my sports and I’ve put a lot of work in to do that.

“There’s still some fine-tuning to do.”

Jen, who completed a tour of Afghanistan and now works as a hospital anaesthetist, has had to use a wheelchair to get around since a skiing accident in 2008.

And she believes the Invictus Games, which was created by Prince Harry in 2014, helps people adapt to the changes in their lives and raises awareness of disability sport.

She added: “For people who have acquired an injury or illness it can be quite difficult to find a new way of life.

“There’s this perception that sports are just for getting fit but I think there’s more it can offer; that sense of achievement and enjoyment.

“There’s a lot to be learned for everybody.

“I’m one of the captains so I’ll be making sure I’m around to support people.

“It’s something I wanted to try.”

Mother-of-one Jen is the daughter of the Rev Richard Lee, the former High Sheriff of Cumbria and team rector of Egremont, and retired Whitehaven consultant paediatrician Deborah Lee.
