WHITEHAVEN RL sailed to victory over the weekend as they took on Midlands Hurricanes.

The West Cumbrian side took on the Midlands outfit on Saturday, June 6, coming away with a 24-30 win.

Head coach James Newton was delighted with the result.

He said: "I think the first forty minutes are the best we've put together this year.

"I think defensively, we really controlled them around the ruck, which made our edge defense really good.

"We were camped on line quite a few times in the first half. Two or three times we've kept out, we've been resilient, but with the ball, attention to detail, we stuck to our game plan, and we executed really well.

"It's been the best forty minutes we've put together. I'm really proud of our efforts."

He continued: "Execution is massive against teams like this. Sometimes, you might only get two or three opportunities in the half.

"But we took them, and we got those opportunities, but it all came off the back of our defense.

"We talked about controlling their ruck, staying really tight around that ruck, and making them go around.

"Bar one, try every try was in the corner, so we controlled their middle, and they're a really big pack.

"I thought we did a job on them today, so I was really proud of the defensive effort. Really, really proud."

He continued: "I think completion was around 85%, we came out of our own end really well.

"It's just a really good feeling when you get into good ball, and you execute what we've worked on since I've taken over.

"It was really good to see that today, but the defensive effort is definitely where we won that game.

"It got a bit squeaky at the end, but to be honest, I thought the full 17 had that connection today where we were going to hold them out.

"So I was confident we were going to win that game, whatever situation we were in, and we did that."
