Global Running Day celebrates all runners, young and old, slow and fast, short-distance and long-distance, on the first Wednesday of June each year.

With the fantastic fells and beautiful views that Cumbria has to offer, it is no surprise that running is so popular in this part of the country.

Although if you hate the rain and the cold, then Cumbria might not be the best place to start your running journey.

For those who are just getting into the sport, or those who have decades of experience and are looking for a new club to join, this list will summarise some of the best options for you in Carlisle and wider Cumbria.

1. Border Harriers Run Club, Carlisle

Known as Cumbria's most successful running club, the Border Harriers attract members from across the county. This might be a spot for those already experienced with the sport, as the club regularly posts winners at local 10k and half-marathon events. They train at the Sheepmount Athletics Track.

2. Eden Runners, Penrith

Eden Runners are based in Penrith. It's members range from GB athletes to slow walk-runners and ages 18 to 80 plus, and also includes a juniors section. They meet at Penrith Rugby Club, Winters Park and allow guests to try it out before committing to joining fully.

3. Fordy Runs, Carlisle

Carlisle's newest running club is certainly an inclusive one and welcomes all ages and abilities. It is definitely one for someone who is looking to get fit and into running, but would still welcome an experienced athlete, in a more relaxed atmosphere.

4. Keswick Athletic Club, Keswick

This group represents a friendly and competitive fell, road and cross country running club in the heart of the English Lake District, for anyone who wants to try their hand at more off-road running. They meet on Tuesdays at the leisure centre for a 6.15pm start.

5. Cumberland AC, Workington

Cumberland AC is a friendly, small running club which has been going strong since 1983. The group meets every Tuesday at Workington Leisure Centre, Workington at 5:50pm for a 6:00pm start.
