Another young rugby star from Copeland has received a huge opportunity at a major club.

George Fisher from Frizington has been playing for Premiership club Leicester Tigers through their academy programme.

Fisher previously played in Egremont Rugby Union Club’s youth ranks from an early age, and club secretary Ian Marr said: “It’s great that George has got the opportunity.”

Naiomi Brennan also has been given a scholarship at Hartpury College. Marr said: “It’s the premier college for rugby in the UK. The two of them used to play together in mixed age groups.”

“George joined us when he was 12.”

Fisher most recently played for Egremont RUFC in last year’s under-16s team. He will be playing in Leicester’s under-18 ranks this year.

The young standout started playing for the Tigers in September and has now returned home to Frizington for half term.

Progression into higher-tier rugby is a priority for the club and Marr hopes to see more youngsters from West Cumbrian towns progressing in sport as the coaches hope to inspire young people.

“We’re giving them the basic skills so that they can reach their potential," he said.

He added that it is all about “encouragement.”

A spokesperson for the club added: “George has played with our youth teams since he was seven and richly deserves this opportunity, which he’s earned through dedication and application.”

They said: “George’s recognition is another example of the success of our clubs youth development programme.

Youth rugby coaching has resumed at Egremont RUFC following the pandemic every Friday and Wednesday.
