Whitehaven will utilise their squad when they take on London Broncos tomorrow in the capital.

Players who weren’t involved in the opening defeat by Swinton Lions will be given an opportunity to show their worth against the former Super League side.

“We have a squad, a group of lads who are all good rugby league players so we will be happy to change things around," said head coach Gary Charlton.

"They all want to be playing and throughout the season will get their chances."

The squad of 25 has been depleted by injuries which sees Glenn Riley, Connor Holliday and Chris Taylor sidelined.

There had been the prospect of seeing Brett Carter back in action after he trained on Wednesday but he will miss out again.

“He was just feeling the hamstring a bit so we don’t want to rush him and do more damage," said Charlton.

"He could be ok for next week."

Hooker Sam Dowsett is also an absentee having pulled a hamstring in training.

There could be a Whitehaven debut in prospect for much-travelled forward Jamie Thackray, while Karl Olstrom is also included as he’s proved his fitness to the coaches after joining the squad late without the benefit of full pre-season training.

Charlton added: “He’s a naturally fit lad who does all this CrossFit work so he’s going to be ready when we need him and will travel with us."

Whitehaven will be staying overnight in Hemel Hempstead after travelling down this afternoon, and take on a Broncos side tomorrow after they had to work for an 18-14 win against Bradford at Dewsbury on the opening day.

Charlton said: “They are a good side – full-time as well.

"Big, strong and fast; it’s going to take an enormous effort from our guys but I know we certainly won’t be lacking in effort and commitment.

“All we can ask is that we improve from game to game.

"I don’t think our defence was far away against Swinton but we need to be a lot smarter and ask questions in attack.”

Whitehaven’s final 17 in London is set to be selected from the initial 21-man squad of: Aiye, Bradley, Bulman, Coward, Forrester, Gillam, Kelly, Moore, Mossop, Newton, Olstrom, Parker, B. Phillips, C. Phillips, Shackley, Thackray, Thompson, Walker, Wilkinson.
