Whitehaven chairman Tom Todd is preaching positivity as his club prepare for a return to the Championship next season.

Last season saw Haven’s swashbuckling side romp to the League 1 title with confidence high and an unbreakable team spirit.

And although Todd is well aware that 2020 will be a stern test for head coach Gary Charlton and his reshaped squad, with a step up in competition and games against the likes of Bradford Bulls, York City Knights and London Broncos, he believes they are well placed to meet the challenge head on and must do so in a positive frame of mind.

“The team spirit last year was just unbelievable,” he said.

“Hopefully this year it will be the same because that’s what we’re going to need.

“Next season is about holding our own and staying up.

“We know there are going to be a few hard games on the horizon but we have to approach them with belief.

“Hopefully we can get off to a cracking start because we’ve got four out of our first five games at home, including friendlies.

“We all know it’s going to be difficult and the players know they are going to have to step up.”

Todd believes Charlton’s leadership will be key to them achieving their goals in 2020.

“I’ve got to be honest, in all the years I’ve been at the club I find it hard to remember someone as motivated as Gary,” Todd added.

“He’s very subtle but his knowledge is massive.

“We’re happy with the team and Gary may have one or two still to come in.

“There’s not a lot about and obviously if you get a massive budget it’s different but I think Gary has done an excellent job.”
