Frizington girl Zoe Brannon secured a top-three finish in the British Open Fell Runners Association Under-12s’ Girls Championship with a second-place run at Wasdale Head.

The 10-year-old racer represented Keswick Athletics Club and was in joint-second position on 442 points with Charlotte Chambers, of Otley Athletics Club.

A fall on the last climb gave Chambers the lead and Brannon was unable to catch her on the grassy slopes of Kirk Fell.

The leap of the final wall into the show field showed grit and determination and paid off as Brannon held off another Yorkshire girl, Milly Timbers, for a well-earned second place on the day.

Never placing out of the top five secured third for Brannon, her rival and friend Chambers finishing second to Lancashire’s Lucille Pickles.

Brannon’s other recent achievements include first under-11 girl in both the opening race of the Mid Lancs Cross Country Series at Ulverston and the opening race of the Cumbria Athletics Cross Country Series at Cockermouth.
