Hardy golfers ignored the torrential rain to take part in the 10th Paul Taylor Memorial Golf tournament at Eskdale Golf Course.

The golf day is held annually in memory of Paul Taylor, who died tragically on the A66 in 2010 and every year the event raises funds for a chosen charity.

This year the 35 golfers took part to raise cash for research into Addison’s Disease, which affected a local youngster.

Egremont mum Ashleigh Offen is raising awareness of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, a form of Addison’s disease, which her son Kyden was diagnosed with.

Kyden was diagnosed very early on in his life and was seriously ill for a time.

His mum Ashleigh, along with her sister Kayleigh and good friend Leslie Taylor are also taking part in the Great North Run later this year to raise funds for the vital research.

After the golf, a presentation afternoon was held at Thornhill Social Club where a fantastic total of £1077.50 was raised for Ashleigh and Kyden and this total, along with sponsorship from the Great North Run will be donated to Addison’s disease research.

The trophy prize winners were: Shield winners – Dougie’s Angels - Team Captain Ryan Douglas, Leslie Taylor and Andrew Melling; Shot of the Day - Mark Harris; Longest Drive 11th hole – Andrew Melling; Nearest Pin 14th hole – Cup and Medallion – Liam Towers; Nearest Pin 16th hole – Liam Towers; Nearest Pin 18th Hole – Ged Fearon; Duffers – Andrew Melling, Liam McCormack, Roger, Les Taylor, John Blaney x3.

This year’s Smiley Trophy, given by Paul’s mum and dad, went to their great-grandson Arthur Paul Melling, aged just seven months, who had travelled up from Wigan with his family for the event.

Organisers thanked all their sponsors J Edgar & Sons Workington, Cumberland Window Design Egremont, KF Kitchens Egremont, L&L property maintenance Workington and the Trophy Shop, Workington.

Thanks also went to Eskdale Golf Course, Thornhill Social Club, Gillian Hewitson, all Paul’s family, all those who donated raffle prizes, everyone who attended the presentation and gave generously and all the golfers for their continued support.

The final Paul Taylor Memorial Golf Tournament event will take place at the Eskdale golf course on June 6 next year.
