Workington Reds have added another safe pair of hands to their squad for the up and coming new season.

Manager Danny Grainger will have another goalkeeper vying for the number one role after Reds agreed terms with Jim Atkinson, 24, on a pre-contract arrangement.

Carlisle-born Atkinson has played all his senior football north of the border listing Queen of the South, Annan Athletic and Gretna 2008 amongst his former clubs.

Like fellow new goalkeeping recruit, Alex Mitchell, who also joined this week, Atkinson has spent time with Annan which, coincidentally, is the destination of last season’s Reds keeper, Aaran Taylor.

Atkinson has played at Borough Park in the past, turning out for Queen of the South in their 2-1 friendly win on the ground three years ago.

He was virtually an ever present for Gretna last season in the Scottish Lowland League and could be making a swift return to Raydale Park with one of Reds’ pre-season games scheduled there next month.

Last season’s mainstay in the nets, Aaran Taylor joined Annan this week, along with former Reds defender Matty Douglas, as they signed for manager Peter Murphy.

n Workington Reds Supporters Club and the Victory Bond Committee have also relaunched the War Chest for the new season.

The chest was originally set up last season in response to an injury crisis at the club. But it proved to be a huge success, raising in excess of £11,000.

And now, as Reds look to lift themselves back into the Northern Premier League, at the first time of asking, the chest has been relaunched.

Fans are asked to consider a straightforward donation of any amount, to try and help Reds succeed on the pitch. All donations will be made available to the manager, to strengthen the squad.
