Workington Golf Club’s Stephen Jackson, Ian Fulton and Andrew Wells have retained their Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Trebles Handicap title with a brilliant 5-2 win over Station Road B’s Tony Elliott, Simon Frazer and Shaun Ayre.

The competition’s six-red handicap format usually makes for a close-run affair but from 2-1 down the Golf Club team hit back to take the title with surprising ease.

The first frame saw the Golf Club’s Andrew Wells (+15 six red handicap) take on Station B’s Simon Frazer (+9). A good pot by Frazer followed by a clearance to pink was enough for the Station B man to win 32-20.

In frame two the Golf Club’s Stephen Jackson (+17) started with some solid potting to stay in front and he edged out Station B’s Shaun Ayre 48-17 to level the tie.

Tony Elliott (+3) produced his usual high level of snooker in frame three to hold off the Golf Club’s Ian Fulton (+13) but with the last red still on the table Fulton still had a chance. Fulton produced some excellent safety however Elliott eventually put his team 2-1 up with a 37-21 win.

Frame four saw the Golf Club’s Stephen Jackson and Station B’s Simon Frazer back at the table and Jackson took a 38-8 victory.

At 2-2 the Golf Club’s Ian Fulton and Station B’s Shaun Ayre were both desperate to gain an advantage for their team but it was Fulton who put the Golf Club 3-2 up with a 41-7 win.

The sixth frame proved to be the turning point, with the Golf Club’s Andrew Wells delivering a 40-28 win over Station B’s Tony Elliott As the game moved along Elliott looked to be in total control and in leaving a difficult shot on the green the Station B cueist stood as firm favourite. However, up stepped Wells and with four highly impressive pots Elliott and his team mates were left stunned as the Golf Club man delivered a 40-28 victory for a 4-2 match lead.

In what turned out to be the final frame of the match the Golf Club’s Ian Fulton added to his small handicap advantage with some solid early play.

Station B’s Simon Frazer produced some good potting of his own but as the final five colours remained Fulton was presented with the chance he was waiting for.

Stroking the green in, quickly followed by the brown and blue, left Frazer needing snookers and even though the Station B cueist delivered a number of good attempts he could not prevent Fulton from taking the title with a 36-20 frame win.
