Workington Town have unveiled ex-Huddersfield assistant Chris Thorman as their new coach until the end of the season.

Thorman was unveiled as the new man at the helm of Derwent Park tonight after Workington had conducted a search for a successor to Leon Pryce.

Thorman, previously assistant coach at Huddersfield Giants, is well respected for his coaching ability, intensive knowledge of the game and as a man-manager.

Town chairman Les Smallwood said Thorman had impressed everyone at the club with his views for moving the side forward.

He said: “We knew that we wanted an experienced coach who could take the club forward in line with our agreed strategy.

“We’ve had intensive conversations over the last few days and Chris has impressed us with his knowledge, passion and clarity of thought on the direction he wants to take to move the season on.

“In the short period of time we’ve had to discuss, Chris has done lots of analysis and will hit the ground running when he meets the players for the first time.

“He’s a big believer in a disciplined but enjoyable environment and that aligns with the board’s thoughts.”

Thorman said he was very keen to get into action with the side and says he has been impressed with the club’s vision.

He says there are some talented players at Derwent Park, and along with some more faces, he believes the squad will be able to challenge for promotion.

Thorman said: “When this vacancy came up it was too good an opportunity to miss.

“Town are well regarded within the game for how they operate on and off the pitch.

“In the many discussions I’ve had with the club over the last few days, I’ve been very impressed with where they want to be and how they want to get there.

“Their strategy is very clear and I can help deliver it on the pitch.

“We’ve got a fantastic group of very talented players and, with a few additional signings, we’ll have a squad capable of getting up to the top of the table.”

Thorman was meeting the players at training tonight and will then head right into battle on Saturday when they take on Hunslet at the South Leeds Stadium in the new 1895 Cup competition, (ko 3pm).

The tie is being streamed live by the RFL’s Our League membership app, and also by the Twitch streaming platform.
