Delighted Workington Reds boss Lee Andrews praised his battling side for a committed performance that saw them edge out Bamber Bridge 2-1 at Borough Park to secure a vital win in their fight for survival.

Reds are now just eight points from safety thanks to the crucial win, one of four that Andrews targeted last week as being key games for the club.

And he admitted that grinding out this result was just the tonic they needed.

“From one to 11 everybody was fully committed today,” he said after the match. “We know that to get out of the situation we are in, we need to grind out some results.

“Once we do that, the confidence will come flooding back and we can play our football. I think today that’s what you call a grind.

“We’ve dug in when we needed to and to be honest I think we were unlucky to only win 2-1 because I thought in the second half we dominated the game.

“But from one to 11 they were all just superb.”

Reds began the game well and were 1-0 ahead thanks to a goal from Sam Joel but then they slipped up moments later and let Bamber Bridge back into the game.

However, Reds were in no mood to surrender this game and they clinched the winner from Sam Smith in the second half and held out to take the points.

Andrews added: “I felt we started the game well and we got our goal but then we conceded and had a bit of a ropey five or 10 minute spell.

“But then after that I felt we were in total control.

“I didn’t feel like we were going to concede a goal to be honest, even at the end when they had two or three minutes of pressure but we defended well, stood up to the task and we looked solid.”
