Garry Schofield is tipping Workington Town for a second-placed finish to the 2019 League One season.

The former Great Britain and Leeds RL star believes that Town will finish just behind Oldham in what is shaping up to be a tough race for promotion as he made his predictions for the new season.

And he believes that Whitehaven will also finish in a play-off position – although just, predicting they will end the term in sixth.

Schofield believes that the Roughyeds will finish top, followed by Workington Town, Doncaster, Newcastle Thunder, Hunslet and Whitehaven, in that order.

In his League Express column, Schofield said: “I like the way Scott Naylor coaches, so I’m expecting big things from him in 2019. The Roughyeds are tough defensively and they like to get ripped in.

“They’ve got good half-backs too, who like to move the ball around nicely. They pushed York and Bradford very close in consecutive weeks towards the end of last season, so they will fear no-one in League One.”

Town begin their 2019 season on February 17 with a trip to Oldham, the two sides clashing in a mouth-watering opener, while Whitehaven are expected to face Keighley at the Recreation Ground.

Next Sunday, January 13, Town and Haven clash in the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy game at Derwent Park, (ko 3pm).
