Distington were winning 18-16 when the game was stopped but Kells were left with a conversion under the sticks as the fixture was cancelled before the kick could be made.
A referee’s report has been submitted and a decision on the result of the game, or if it will need to be replayed, is due to be made on Monday.
“We have a very young side, I think only one or two of our players are over 20,” Cunningham said. “They are over the moon with how they played and in my eyes they are winners. It was real David vs Goliath stuff.
“I can’t fault them for how they played and the conversion was in front of the sticks, there’s no way that would have been missed so we’d have been at 18-18 and we were going down the hill for the last 20 minutes.
“As far as we know the referee was being shouted at by opposition players and supporters and he made the decision to stop the game.
“I hope the game isn’t replayed, the lads did enough out there to get a result and we’ve got some other really big games to prepare for.”
