Workington Comets fired a warning shot at their rivals with a record-breaking away win in their opening SGB Championship league meeting of the year at Peterborough before trouncing Glasgow on their own track in the Championship Shield.

The weekend started in surreal fashion as a patched-up Comets side who have struggled for track time so far this year dismantled Peterborough in their first SGB Championship fixture.

A youthful Workington team won 57-33 as Dan Bewley and Bradley Wilson-Dean scored double figures and Ty Proctor earned a paid maximum.

Comets then travelled to Ashfield in the Championship Shield and stunned the team many have down as title favourites, with the aforementioned trio again putting in stellar performances to take maximum points and close on the Tigers in their group.

Comets held Glasgow to a 3-3 in the opening heat, with Tiger Lewis Kerr setting a new track record ahead of Rene Bach and Rasmus Jensen, before Wilson-Dean beat James Sarjeant and Jack Thomas for another draw in heat two.

Proctor and Bewley have been in fine form recently and they combined for a 5-1 to nudge Comets ahead in heat three, with ex-Comet Claus Vissing third.

Bewley came agonisingly close to breaking the track record in heat four as he led Wilson-Dean in another 5-1 for the visitors before a shared heat five.

Glasgow finally clicked in heat six as Kerr and Chris Harris delivered a 5-1, but Bewley snatched the track record in heat seven just six races after it was set, roaring to a win ahead of Proctor and Worrall as Comets stretched their lead back to eight points.

They defended that lead with a 3-3 in heat eight but the Tigers halved the deficit again with a 5-1 in heat nine as Kerr continued his winning streak.

Comets steadied the ship with a draw in heat 10, with Kerr untouchable but Proctor and Bewley comfortable behind him, before again going eight points clear of Glasgow as Jensen and Bach dominated heat 11.

It got even better in heat 12, with Wilson-Dean and Proctor adding another 5-1 to put Comets 12 points up with three heats to go, before sealing an incredible win with a 4-2 in heat 13 through Proctor and Bach.

They weren’t finished yet as Bewley and Wilson-Dean put another 5-1 on the board in the penultimate heat, with Proctor and Bewley making it 56-33 as they coasted round for a 5-1 as the only finishers in the last heat.

Meanwhile former Comet Craig Cook, of Cleator, made a respectable start to his Grand Prix career with a couple of points in the season opener at Warsaw.

Cook was on the pace in every race in a promising start but an early warning put the pressure on and perhaps meant he didn’t show as much as he is capable of.
