Team camaraderie is already high in the Workington Reds camp - as the new season looms on the horizon.

Reds joint chairman John Mackay says a superb spirit at the club can be key to their success and puts much of it down to the attitude of managers Dave Hewson and Lee Andrews.

Workington have one pre-season friendly remaining on August 11 before the Evo Stik Northern Premier League kicks into action on August 18.

And Mackay believes the spirit in the camp can spur them on for a successful season.

"There is just a great atmosphere in the squad," said Mackay. "They go out there and play as a team.

"Much of it stems from the managers, they have such a good rapport with the lads.

"You see the camaraderie between them all, everyone plays for each other and for the team.

"They don't just turn up for their pay packet each week. They love the game and want to progress."

Mackay admitted it was great to see Hewson back in harness following an illness that kept him off the sidelines for much of last season.

"He's been given the all clear and it is great that he is going from strength to strength again," said Mackay.

"It is good to have him back alongside Lee and I think they have made some really good signings this year and we have high hopes."

The club is still involved with talks about a new shared stadium with neighbours Workington Town.

But they are not resting on their laurels at Borough Park either, making an extended area for sponsors' seating and improving the club shop area.

Reds' final friendly is at the home of Mossley AFC next Saturday, with the first game of the league season taking place at Borough Park, when Stafford Rangers will be the visitors.
