Testimonial star Carl Forber still has a lot to offer Workington Town says assistant coach Craig McDowell.

The half-back had a hand in at least three of Town's tries in their win over Keighley Cougars at the weekend.

And McDowell says his level head and experience are vital in their League One play-off bid.

"Carl is obviously a seasoned professional, he keeps himself in good shape and seems to be getting better week on week," said McDowell.

"This weekend his out of hand kicking created tries and he is the player who keeps us on track."

Forber's half-back partnership with Jamie Doran has also paid dividends for the club this year.

McDowell added: "They really complement each other on the field. Jamie has a strong running game and carries the ball well, with good work at the play-the ball.

"Carl offers some calmness and guidance a bit like a key chess piece.

"You have one piece on the board that keeps you where you need to be."

Two great kicks from Forber led to two of Elliott Miller's hat-trick last Sunday against the Cougars, with his third coming from a pass from the experienced number seven.

Town had not had a great first half display and coach Leon Pryce praised Forber after the match for settling the side down.

McDowell added: "It was the old head and rear guard of Carl and Elliott that seemed to really work well for us.

"Carl came off with the official man of the match and deservedly so. Hopefully he can continue to put in some impressive performances for us."

Town can build on the 34-21 victory over Keighley this weekend when they entertain Coventry Bears at Derwent Park.

Workington remain in third place in League One as the race for the play-off slots heats up.
