Workington Reds are relaunching the official Supporters Club.

The move is an attempt to bring all the independent fan groups together and have supporters and the club stronger as one entity.

A club statement said: “The Reds are extremely grateful for all the efforts of supporters in raising vital funds every season, contributing to the running costs and allowing the board and managers to bring in new players.

“We have a number of independent fan groups, as well as the official Supporters Club, and we feel that each fundraising initiative would be stronger and even more successful if we all worked together to make them bigger and better.

“Also, there are a limited number of local businesses with the ability or desire to support us financially, and there are a number of sports clubs in the area targeting the same sources.

“Instead of three or four groups approaching these companies on behalf of Workington AFC, we believe it would put us in a more professional light and lead to us securing more funds if each approach was from an official Supporters Club.”

The club also says it will also be looking at new ways to reward club members for their valued support.

Reds recently appointed a commercial manager, Darrell Thomas, and have reorganised the board of directors.

The new structure will see each director taking the strategic lead on an area of the club’s work.

John Mackay will become chairman and will primarily be responsible for supporting and challenging the rest of the board as they deliver the work on their areas of responsibility.

Don Blackwell will act as vice-chairman and as operational director.

He will lead on stadium and pitch matters, while Steve Durham’s role as football director means he will act as the main link between the board and the club secretary, first team and reserves. He will also lead on communications.

Mike Rollo will be commercial and finance director while Ross Peacock will be the community director and will be the board’s link to Reds in the Community, Reds Ladies and the Reds Juniors.

Dave Cumberworth will be partnerships director, leading on building relationships with clubs and businesses beyond Cumbria.
