Workington Reds have a trip to the north east in prospect when they start their FA Cup trail on September 8.

The Reds have been drawn away to Newcastle Benfield of the Northern League First Division in the first qualifying round. The winners will pocket £6,000.

Newcastle Benfield have already played twice in the FA Cup in the extra preliminary round and the preliminary round.

They won 3-0 at Stockton Town and, on Saturday, had a good 1-0 victory over West Auckland who play in the same division and are five points better off.

After winning their opening game in the Northern League they drew the next and, since then, have lost both league fixtures to lie 11th of the 19 competing clubs.

Reds’ management duo of Dave Hewson and Lee Andrews will have an opportunity to look at the opposition on Wednesday, August 5 when they host Whitley Bay in the league.

Reds chairman John Mackay said: “If we had been at home I think we would have been reasonably confident about going through. But it’s a little bit different going over there as matches in the north east are traditionally tricky.

“There’s extra incentive this season for the smaller club as the FA have doubled the prize money, so a good cup run will be so valuable.”
