Workington Reds are through to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup after beating Newcastle Benfield in an action packed replay at Borough Park.

Reds won the clash 5-3, making sure of the game with two late goals but all credit to their lower league visitors who pushed them all the way.

It was nearly all Reds in the opening 15 minutes as they rattled two early goals in but then the visitors began to get back into the game and a cracking encounter ensued.

Benfield tested the Reds defence early on but not only did they come out on top they also brought the ball away and created the chance for he home side to take the lead.

Tenacious work from the on-loan Max Brown as he harried the keeper saw the ball fumbled and it came out to Scott Allison who made no mistake from close range.

Brown then got his just rewards minutes later as he scored a spectacular goal to double Reds' lead. Brown turned on the edge of the box and volleyed it home into the top of the net to the cheers of the crowd.

The Carlisle United youngster was on-fire as he beat the defence on several occasions and got in some great crosses.

But the visitors began to settle into the game and had their own opportunities with a series of corners and then a header from Joe Robson going just wide.

A long ball then found Dennis Knight a fraction ahead of the Reds defence and as Aaran Taylor loomed in front of him he looked to lift it over the top of the advancing keeper but it also just went over the net.

Reds looked to try and regain their early ascendancy but the final ball was lacking and a penalty call for a handball was denied by the referee.

Newcastle attacked again through Dale Pearson and he got a great cross in for Knight but his final shot was wayward and Reds breathed another sigh of relief.

The ball ping-ponged around the penalty area as Reds were unlucky not to extend their lead but then Benfield broke away again.

They picked up a free kick around 25-yards out and Knight stepped up with a strong shot that had Taylor diving to palm it round the post. Then at the opposite end of the field a ferocious shot from Kieran Maguire just missed the target.

The game was going from end to end as Pearson had the opportunity to get his side back into the game as he bore down on Taylor and tried to chip the keeper who proved up to the task, leaping to collect.

And at half time it was Reds who still had the two-goal advantage.

A curling shot from Brown opened the second half with a bang for Reds as it went fractionally wide of the Benfield goal.

Then Conor Tinnion got a little flick onto the end of a cross from Matty Douglas that the keeper just got a touch on to put it out for a corner.

But Reds were not to be denied and as the ball came in low, Sam Joel was in the right place to just get a little back flick into the net to get the home side's third.

Benfield came back into contention on 59 minutes as Pearson wrong-footed the Reds defence and slammed the ball over Taylor and under the crossbar to narrow the home advantage.

And four minutes later there was only one goal in it as Joe Robson met a corner with a powerful header into the back of the net with the visitors on the up.

Reds looked to Tinnion for inspiration with another special free kick as he stood over the ball just outside the area but despite finding his way around the wall, it also went wide of the post.

The home side had to resort to some desperate defence in the box from a corner as the visitors kept coming at them, sensing an opportunity - and they nearly got it.

A mistake at the back from Dan Wordsworth allowed Paul Branson in on goal and he forced a great save from Taylor who kept Reds in the match.

Workington then gave away a free kick in a dangerous position but this time Branson did not have his shooting boots on as he sent it flying high over the terracing.

Brown tried his luck with a shot from just outside the area but it lacked power and despite taking a slight bobble in front of him, keeper Matthew Bancroft gathered.

And Taylor again proved Workington's saviour with a save at the feet of the advancing sub McKenzie Heaney.

Reds made sure of the game in a crazy three-minute spell. First Tinnion whipped in a corner but it was put into the back of the net by a Newcastle defender for an own goal.

And moments later Reds substitute Sheldon Mossop hammered the ball into the net to all but seal their passage into the next round.

But Benfield had not given up hope and a shot from the edge of the box from Knight found its way through a sea of defenders and into the goal for 5-3.

Despite a frantic final few moments it was Reds who finished on top to net the cash prize and move into the next round.
