Workington Town’s hard work this season has been recognised – with two nominations for the Betfred Championship and League 1 Awards.

Town boss Leon Pryce, in his first year in charge at Derwent Park, has been shortlisted for the League One coach of the year category.

While influential hooker Sean Penkywicz has also been named in the four-man shortlist for League One Player of the Year,

Officials at the club are delighted at the recognition and believe it is well-deserved for the efforts the duo have put in this season, with Town challenging for a play-off place.

“We’re very pleased to have two from Workington Town nominated,” said vice chairman Malcolm Allison.

“Sean has been a great leader on the pitch and has turned in some match turning performances.

“His quality and experience has shone through all season.

“Leon has done a fantastic job in his first year as a coach in an extremely competitive league.

“He has a winning mentality and that’s what we wanted to bring to the club.

“He is in good coaching company in Kear and Ford and we’re sure that whatever the outcome of the awards he’ll have a great career in coaching.”

Pryce goes up against some quality opposition for the coaching accolade with York’s James Ford and Bradford’s John Kear also nominated.

The former Bradford and St Helens star has taken his first steps on the coaching ladder with Town this year and has taken them up the league ladder.

Penkywicz takes on another three players, judged to have stood out for their respective sides this term.

There are two from York in Ben Cockayne and Connor Robinson, alongside the Bulls’ Dane Chisholm.

Experienced playmaker Penkywicz has made a big difference to the Town side this season.

Having played in the top flight with Halifax and Huddersfield, before joining Leigh in the Championship and then playing for League One promotion-winning Toronto Wolfpack last season, his big game knowledge has been invaluable.

He has already committed his future to the Workington side for next season.

The remaining League One award is for the Young Player of the Year and shortlisted are: Brandon Pickersgill (Bradford Bulls), Ethan Ryan (Bradford Bulls) and Judah Mazive (York City Knights).

The winners will be announced at the 2018 Betfred Championship and League One annual dinner in Manchester on Tuesday, September 25.
