Workington Town legend Arnold “Boxer” Walker is set to join an elite group of players in the club’s Hall of Fame.

Scrum half Boxer, who was voted the best number seven in the world in 1980, played at Town for nine years, between 1971 and 1979, making 191 appearances, scoring 53 tries and kicking 35 drop goals.

And he was man of the match in Workington’s Lancashire Cup victory in 1977.

He is set to join the Hall of Fame next Friday at a sell-out Vice President’s event.

“We are all absolutely thrilled that the vice presidents have voted to admit Boxer into the Workington Town Hall of Fame,” said a statement from the club’s board of directors.

“Boxer is a legend, not only at Workington Town, but also in the wider game as well.

“He is renowned as a character within rugby league who brought that fun element to his game on the pitch. And off the pitch Boxer is fantastic to be in the company of and we know that the demand for tickets was very strong, as we knew it would be.”

Walker launched his biography by Mike Gardner last year, with some fantastic tales of a successful career.

The Town statement continued: “We were very proud to work with Boxer to launch his life story last year and we are very proud, as a club, that we hold a special place in Boxer’s heart, as he does in ours.

“The directors are very much looking forward to the event next week as we believe the heritage of the club is massively important and the players who pulled on the Workington Town jersey should be celebrated.

“Boxer is one of the finest players that ever graced Derwent Park and we are honoured to have him as an ex-player.

“We do see Boxer regularly at the club and we hope that that continues well into the future.

“And finally a message to Boxer would be just to have a fantastic night and recognise and enjoy the very high esteem that everyone at the club holds you in.”

This will be Boxer’s second induction into a Hall of Fame, as he is also included in Whitehaven’s – believed to be an almost unique occurrence for any player.
