Workington Reds had to share the spoils with visitors Marine in a scrappy encounter, dictated a lot by the driving wind and rain that swept across Borough Park for the majority of the game.

Two goals within the space of four minutes in the first half dictated the outcome with Sam Joel's opener for Reds cancelled out by one for Marine's Danny Mitchley and it finished 1-1.

Reds were caught on the hop in the opening moments as they faced into the driving wind and rain and Craig Carney found himself in the clear but the chance just slipped past Aaran Taylor's post.

Then the visitors were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position and Ken Strickland's goal-bound shot had to be tipped over the bar by a stretching Taylor, with the resulting corner seeing Daniel Shaw's header go over the bar.

Jason Walker won a free-kick at the opposite end of the field as he went down just outside the area but Niall Cowperthwaite's effort was always going well over the target.

Carney had another shot with the game in its 16th minute with Taylor again called on to block and regather. And only minutes later, Taylor again thwarted the Carney before Danny Mitchley put the rebound wide.

It looked as though it would be Marine who would take the lead as they were dominant in the opening stages but, in fact, the first goal actually went to Reds.

It was against the run of play and Brad Hubbold had made a nice run forward only to find himself blocked but the ball came back to him and he played in the supporting Joel who slid the ball home past a diving keeper to take the lead.

But the visitors had the perfect response and, after winning a corner, it was floated into the box and Mitchley was there to finally beat Taylor and head home from close-range.

This seemed to liven Reds up and first Scott Allison was hemmed in inside the area and then Joel tried his luck again but, this time, the keeper was on hand to block his shot.

Reds picked up another free-kick when Jordan Holt was brought down and, this time, Cowperthwaite lofted the ball in and found the imposing figure of Dan Wordsworth but again the keeper thwarted his effort.

The weather was having a big say on the game and neither side could find a real foothold to take control and they went in at the break still at 1-1.

The second half was only a couple of minutes old when a thunderous shot from Jason Walker had Marine keeper Martin Fearon under pressure but he managed to steer it off target.

It took a while before either side had any real chance of note and the next came from a more unexpected source.

Sub Gari Rowntree, on at half-time for Cowperthwaite, showed some nice footwork to dance his way into the box and took the shot on the angle but the keeper was again on hand to block.

Rowntree floated a nice free-kick into the area and it was initially cleared but it came to the feet of Hubbold who got a lovely cross in that had to be cleared by a scrambling Shaw at the expense of a corner.

Hubbold had a chance of his own but saw his thundering shot go wide and then, in the 81st minute, Reds had their best chance of the second half.

The best chance came for Joel when Hubbold played him in and he jinked his way inside before turning and shooting but his effort rebounded off the side post.

It was a scrappy finish to the end of the game and the points were shared at the final whistle.
