"We didn't deserve the three points so we didn't get them" was the brutally honest opinion of Workington Reds boss Dave Hewson after their draw with Marine on Tuesday night.

The two sides clashed in the EvoStik Northern Premier League game at Borough Park where two goals in the space of four minutes cancelled each other out to see a 1-1 draw in heavy rain and wind.

But Hewson was unhappy with the performance from Reds and called for a huge improvement when they travel to Basford United on Saturday.

"Fair play to Marine who came and worked so hard against the conditions," said Hewson. "They really dug in and created the better opportunities so they will probably feel a little hard done by.

"We weathered the early storm, conditions were difficult with wind and rain and they put us under a lot of pressure but thanks to Aaran Taylor we only conceded one goal in that half.

"We had got the first goal but we didn't really kick on from there but when they got their goal I was pleased with our response.

"We looked like the team that was possibly going to score the next in the first half.

"So the half time talk was simple, 'we have done the hard work but if you just expect to turn up in the second half because you've got a little bit of wind behind you, it's not going to happen'.

"And we did nowhere near enough in the second half to deserve three points."

Hewson was scathing of the second half performance which turned very scrappy.

"I think there were only two shots that their keeper had to save in the second half," added Hewson.

"We didn't get enough balls in the box, and didn't pick up enough first and second balls to keep them under any kind of sustained pressure.

"It was far too easy for them to bring the ball out of defence without any pressure and for the midfield to pick it up and be able to have space and time on the ball.

"So there was a lot of frustrating thing in the second half.

"And when you don't do the basics right, then you haven't got much chance."

In another blow for Reds Niall Cowperthwaite had to come off at half time through injury and Hewson says they will have to check on him later in the week to see if he will be fit for the weekend.

"We maybe rushed him back a bit too soon so we will have to wait and see," said Hewson.

"We have got a lot to think about in terms of our preparation for Saturday because we need a big improvement."
