Hyde United 0 Workington Reds 0: Workington Reds collected their first point away from home after a determined performance at Hyde United.

The return of veteran Kyle May coincided with an upbeat display from the Cumbrians who were collecting their first clean sheet since the first game of the season.

It could have been even better as Kieran Maguire hit the bar; Conor Tinnion had a free-kick clawed away from the top corner, and Sam Joel had the ball taken from his toes by the Hyde keeper when he was put clean through.

Workington had the first serious shot at goal from a Jason Walker effort on the edge of the box but keeper Peter Crook got down to save.

Tom Pratt countered with a good break down the right and a dangerous cross was headed behind by Matty Douglas and Aaron Taylor punched the corner clear.

When play swept to the other end, Maguire rattled the Hyde bar from 35 yards but Joel, following up, shot wide.

Workington had settled well and were playing some neat and tidy football, looking bright and dangerous when they got forward.

There was almost a dream return for May when he got on the end of a Tinnion free-kick but poked the ball wide.

Hyde’s best effort came from a Janni Lipka free-kick which was headed over by Tom Greaves. Then a miscue by Dan Wordsworth cleared Taylor but was cleared by May as it bounced towards the net.

The home side started to apply pressure and Jamie Mellen did well under pressure to head away, then May made a great clearing header from a dangerous cross from Kyle Brownhill.

Walker did well when he was on the end of a Crook clearance and a header from 30 yards had the keeper scrambling but was wide.

There was a scare at the other end when Pratt tried one from the edge of the area which was deflected wide for a corner which Reds cleared.

There was an early chance for Greaves when he broke clear but his shot on the run swerved well wide.

Reds went close on 49 minutes when a free-kick from Tinnion was clawed away by Crook as it headed for the top corner. He also had to be alert to palm away Tinnion’s curling corner.

Then, a free-kick from Tinnion saw May steal in with a powerful header which Crook held under the bar.

Hyde had a chance on 62 minutes when Mellen fouled Luke Porritt on the edge of the box but Lipka shot over the bar.

At the other end, Scott Allison cut in from the right but his cross was put over the top by Tinnion from beyond the far post.

It was end-to-end now into the final quarter and Hyde had a chance when Pratt broke through but his curling shot hit the foot of the post and, as Porritt moved in for the rebound, he was flagged offside.

Play swept to the other end when Joel was put clean through but, as he tried to go round Crook, the keeper made a superb save to take the ball off his toes.

There was almost disaster for Reds when Taylor and May both went to clear a ball on the edge of the area and got in each other’s way but, fortunately, Matty Douglas was there to tidy up.

Brownhill, who had spent time on loan with the Reds, fired in a strong shot from 25 yards which Taylor held at full stretch.

Three minutes of added time failed to produce a winner and Reds had collected their first away point.
