One of Workington Town’s most famous sons Arnold ‘Boxer’ Walker believes his former side can pull off a major upset this weekend.

Walker, who was inducted into the Town Hall of Fame last weekend, is backing the Workington players to the hilt as they prepare for tomorrow’s Betfred League One play-off final against Bradford.

The scrum-half, who was voted the best number seven in the world in 1980, played at Town for nine years, between 1971 and 1979 and is well placed to hand out some tips.

“I really think that Town can cause an upset,” said Walker, who was part of Workington’s Lancashire Cup winning side in 1977.

“When we won the Lancashire Cup against Wigan, everyone thought we would get hammered. But we won and proved everyone wrong.

“We can do that again on Sunday. The players have to believe in themselves just like we did.”

He was full of praise for the new crop of talent at Derwent Park, under the charge of Leon Pryce.

And he says if they dig deep they can take the win at Odsal and lift the entire town.

“There is a lot of talent in Town’s team and I have a feeling they can pull it off,” he added.

“We have a great coach who has achieved everything as a player so I have no doubt that the team will be ready and well-prepared.

“They just have to dig deep and play with their hearts, like we did in 1977.

“Our rugby league team is at the centre of everything in Workington and on Sunday I am sure our players will do the town and all our fans proud.”

Walker joined the Workington Hall of Fame last Friday at a sell-out Vice President’s event.

This is Boxer’s second induction into a Hall of Fame, as he is also included in Whitehaven’s – believed to be an almost unique occurrence for any player.
