A popular European holiday airport is set to close for nearly a week, resulting in the cancellation of all flights, affecting thousands of British travellers.
Almería Airport in Spain welcomes thousands of British travellers each year.
However, it will shut down for six days to allow for runway upgrades.
Almería Airport in Spain to close and cancel all flights
Almería Airport is located 9 km east of Almería city centre and is close to the main tourist centres of the province such as the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, El Ejido, Mojácar, Roquetas de Mar or Vera.
Thankfully for travellers, although it was announced recently, the closure will not take effect until February 2028.
However, flights during the closure period will be cancelled, with airlines including Ryanair, easyJet, and Iberia already notified of the disruption.
The runway works are part of a larger 19-month, €29 million (£24.8m) renovation project—the first work on the runway in 20 years.
During this period, there will be night work between 10.45pm and 7.10am, during which flights will be impacted.
The airport, located about 15 minutes from Almeria city centre in Andalusia, serves up to 800,000 passengers annually.
British travellers account for between 55 and 70% of the airport's traffic.
Flights from Almería to the UK include direct routes to Birmingham, London Southend, Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, and Leeds Bradford.
It is not the first Spanish airport to close for runway improvements in recent times.
Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport closed for around four weeks between the end of April and May earlier this year due to resurfacing.
