The UK's Covid-19 alert level has been lowered in severity from four to three.

In what has been described as a "big moment" for the country, the Government's chief medical officers have agreed that the UK's coronavirus threat level should be lowered from "transmission is high or rising exponentially" to "epidemic is in general circulation."

The threat of the virus has been lowered by one level from four to three following guidance from The Joint Biosecurity Centre.

Covid-19 in England was previously classified as "transmission is high or rising exponentially."

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock has called it "a big moment" for the country as the Government relaxes lockdown restrictions.
