A FORMER coroner’s court building is set to be sold as part of a council’s wider asset disposal programme.
The Fairfield Office, located on Station Road in Cockermouth, previously housed HM Coroner’s Service for Cumbria before its recent relocation to purpose-built facilities at Allerdale House in Workington.
Councillor Barbara Cannon, Cumberland Council’s executive member for financial planning and assets, said: "The former coroner’s court building has served this council, its predecessors, and members of the public well for so many years.
"However, with the recent move of HM Coroner’s Service to our offices at Allerdale House in Workington, this building is surplus to requirements and we’re making it available for sale.
"The programme to dispose of surplus assets such as this is part of our transformation plan which is designed to help us meet financial challenges and ensure the council is more financially sustainable in the longer term."
The property offers more than 2,600 square feet of office space and includes land that was previously used as a car park.
It is situated in a central location next to the Sainsbury’s store and Fairfield car park.
Cumberland Council currently owns the building and is seeking to sell the freehold as part of its wider effort to dispose of assets that are no longer needed.
The sale is aimed at helping the council meet financial challenges and improve long-term sustainability.
The site is being marketed by property agents Walton Goodland on behalf of the council.

Cumberland Council has said that the disposal programme focuses on properties that do not meet the current needs of services or customers or fail to deliver value for money for taxpayers.
