United Utilities, the North West water company, is planning a series of improvements to boost the resilience of both systems as part of its largest investment programme in more than a century.
A key part of the work involves upgrading a 900-metre section of wastewater pipeline running from West Strand Pumping Station to Whitehaven Wastewater Treatment Works.
A spokesman for United Utilities said: "This project is not connected to the discoloured water that has recently been observed in Whitehaven Harbour.
"The scheme help reduce the risk of bursts and disruption to the local community.
"Work is due to take three months and is expected to start in Autumn subject to the necessary approvals."
In addition, the company is planning to upgrade 1.5km of water mains in Whitehaven town centre to improve the reliability of drinking water supplies.
Work on the mains is scheduled to begin in the new year.
United Utilities will host a public drop-in event on September 7 from 2pm to 7pm at The Beacon Portal on West Strand, Whitehaven.
