NEW pedestrian crossings are set to be delivered in Whitehaven in response to safety concerns raised by residents.
Councillor Joseph Ghayouba, who represents Bransty, said the need for pedestrian crossings either side of the Pelican Garage were a key issue in his ward.
Residents find Loop Road and New Road, either side of the garage, a "nightmare" to cross at peak times, with concerns raised about the potential for a serious accident.
In an update for residents of his ward, posted on Wednesday, he said that a crossing on New Road is expected to be delivered by the end of the financial year, after he worked with Cumberland Council to secure and allocate the funding for the development.
He said: "Cumberland Council have secured the money and allocated it for a pedestrian crossing to be built on New Road. That's happening, that is going to be done."
The council is also working with National Highways to secure a second crossing beside the Pelican Garage, on the Loop Road side.
It is a busy road used by residents of areas like Mirehouse and Hensingham as well as a key commuter route to Egremont and areas further south.
Cllr Ghayouba said that he is working to get the Loop Road crossing delivered at the same time as the New Road crossing, with Josh MacAlister, Member of Parliament for Whitehaven and Workington and Cllr Denise Rollo, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places.
Cllr Ghayouba said: "What we are trying to do is we are trying to get National Highways to agree to build their pedestrian crossing on the Loop Road side of the Pelican Garage at exactly the same time."
National Highways is expected to make a decision in the next week.
Cllr Ghayouba said: "One of them is definitely happening, the other one is a maybe but as I say, that is something that myself; Josh MacAlister and Cumberland Council are all working to try and get delivered, so watch this space on that one."
Cllr Ghayouba said he would continue pressing for progress and keep residents updated.
