Lloyd Motor Group celebrates 50 years in business

Lloyd Motor Group began as a single BMW showroom on Derwent Street in Cockermouth, West Cumbria, in 1976.

Since then, it has grown into one of the UK’s most respected automotive groups, representing brands including BMW, MINI, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Škoda, Volvo, and Kia.

Sam Lloyd, managing director of Lloyd Motor Group, said: "Fifty years is a significant milestone, and one we mark with a great deal of humility.

"This business was built on trust, hard work and long-term relationships, and that hasn't changed since the day we opened our doors in Cockermouth in 1976.

"Everything we've achieved has been down to the loyalty of our customers, the dedication of our colleagues, and the support of the communities we serve.

"We're proud of our history, but we're just as focused on the next fifty years as we are on the last."

The company’s journey began on August 4, 1976, when R. Lloyd Motors Ltd was established with a simple ambition: to provide exceptional service and premium automotive experiences to its local community.

Just a year later, Volvo was added to the portfolio, and in the 1980s, the group expanded beyond West Cumbria with the opening of Carlisle BMW.

The 1990s saw the addition of Land Rover, followed by Jaguar, BMW, and MINI in the 2000s.

This expansion took the group further into Cumbria, Newcastle, and Lancashire.

In the 2010s, Lloyd Motor Group launched new Jaguar Land Rover retail centres in Ripon and Kelso, alongside Blackpool BMW, Lloyd Used Car Centre Carlisle, and the addition of Kia.

Recent growth has brought new sites in York and the North East as well as the addition of INEOS, Volkswagen, Škoda, BYD, and Geely.

To mark its 50th anniversary, Lloyd Motor Group has launched community initiatives and charitable activities across its retail locations.

Customer stories, employee spotlights, and reflections from senior leaders are also being shared through a dedicated 50th-anniversary website hub.

The original Cockermouth site remains part of the company’s network, serving as a reminder of its roots and the journey it has taken over the past five decades.
