A venue in Whitehaven is to host an evening with a rugby league club legend and some his teammates later this month.
The Haven Club will welcome Wigan Warriors winger and 10-year stalwart Liam Marshall on Saturday, August 22 at 7pm, along with Australian star teammates Jai Field, Bevan French, and Kaide Ellis
This being his testimonial year, Mr Marshall will deliver a speech detailing the story of his career, with the other Warriors mixing among audience members, and potentially forming a panel during a Q&A.
Event organiser Peter Boyle, known to many as ‘Frenchie’, spoke of the opportunity to meet the three Australian stars: “I just thought they’d [Whitehaven rugby league fans] come up and listen to life's top players.
“You know, Field and French, they’re lads who have played in Australia.
“They played for top teams in Australia, but, you know, they've likely been discarded from their clubs, and they've come over here to make their living, you know, and they've sort of lit the super league up as I can see.”
So far, 90 out of 120 tickets have been sold at £30 per head, with Mr Boyle joking: “If I can get some seats on the roof, I'll put them up there as well.”
A meal of pie, peas, and gravy is provided in the ticket price, with there being no strict dress code – just and expectation to ‘dress tidily’.
Mr Boyle has previously hosted athletes with the highest of public profiles in Whitehaven, including boxers Roberto Duran and Evander Holyfield, and footballers Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne. and Kevin Keegan.
Liam Marshall is a serial winner with the Warriors, scoring the only try in the 2023 Grand Final and earning back-to-back Dream Team selections.
Jai Field’s blistering pace has driven Wigan’s recent success, while Bevan French, the 2023 Man of Steel, made history in 2024 with three major final man-of-the-match awards.
Kaide Ellis is a consistent, hard-hitting forward who has strengthened Wigan’s pack since his move from the NRL.
