Looking for exciting family days out this summer?

From hands-on workshops and fascinating exhibitions to prehistoric creatures and local history adventures, The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven is packed with activities to keep visitors of all ages entertained throughout the school holidays. Whether you're searching for a rainy-day attraction or a memorable family outing, The Beacon offers a summer programme full of discovery, creativity and fun.

A major highlight of the season arrives on July 18, with Carboniferous Monsters, an exciting blockbuster exhibition that transports visitors more than 300 million years into the past. Featuring giant insects, amphibians and creatures that lived long before the dinosaurs, it promises an unforgettable experience for curious minds and budding palaeontologists.

The summer calendar is packed with activities for all ages. Families can meet fascinating creatures during Pet Encounters, get creative at Glass Fusing for Kids sessions, enjoy the hands-on learning of the popular It’s Not Rocket Science workshops.

Young engineers can also build, program and experiment during interactive LEGO® WeDo Workshops, combining creativity with STEM learning. For those interested in local heritage, the engaging People, Pubs & Politics walking tours offer a fascinating insight into Whitehaven’s rich history and colourful characters.

Adding to the excitement, August will see The Beacon Museum host its Pirate Extravaganza workshops, perfectly timed to coincide with the visit of the magnificent Nao Santa Maria to Whitehaven Harbour. Young adventurers can become real pirates through hands-on games, creative challenges and maritime-themed fun, making it one of the standout events of the summer holidays.

With a combination of interactive galleries, exciting exhibitions and a varied events programme, The Beacon Museum is set to be one of West Cumbria’s top destinations this summer. Whether you're exploring local history, uncovering prehistoric worlds or taking part in family activities, there's plenty to enjoy throughout the season.
