Cumberland Council's order will affect a 470-metre stretch of Inkerman Terrace (A5094) in Whitehaven, from its junction with the A595 and extending north-west.
The closure, expected to start July 20, is to allow utility works to take place and applies to all traffic, including vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
Alternative routes are in place.
Southbound drivers are advised to follow the A5094, Strand Street, Tangier Street, Bransty Row, New Road and the A595.
Northbound drivers should divert via the A595, New Road, Bransty Row, Church Street, Duke Street, Scotch Street and the A5094.
The council has stated the closure is currently expected to last 42 days only.
Work will be restricted to times when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
