Under the plans, a section of Meadow Road is scheduled to be closed from July 7.
The closure will affect a 110-metre stretch from the junction with Skiddaw Road, extending in a north-westerly direction.
An order issued by Cumberland Council states the closure could remain in force for up to 18 months, but the works are expected to take nine weeks.
Alternative signposted routes will be in place for northbound and southbound traffic.
Northbound vehicles will be diverted via unrestricted sections of Meadow Road, Meadow View, B5345 New Town, Swingpump Lane, Strand Street, Duke Street, Scotch Street, Flat Walks, Inkerman Terrace, and the A595.
Southbound vehicles will be diverted via the unrestricted section of Meadow Road, A595, Inkerman Terrace, Flat Walks, Irish Street, New Town, and Meadow View.
Officials say a way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.
