Emergency road restriction for town centre asbestos removal

An emergency temporary road restrictions has been put in place in part of a town centre road due to an asbestos removal operation.

Whitehaven Town Council announced the restriction via social media on June 18.

The restriction has been implemented as part of efforts to safeguard the public from the substance "due to the  likelihood of danger as a result of asbestos  removal."

Lowther Street in Whitehaven's town centre has been shut off from its junction with Chapel Street, extending northwest for approximately 10 metres.

The restriction is expected to be in place for up to 15 days but could remain for up to 21 days and when the relevant signs are in place.

A statement from the council read: "An emergency temporary restriction has been put in place due to the likelihood of danger as a result of asbestos removal."

It added: "Should you have any queries in relation to this restriction please contact the Highways Hotline by calling 0300 373 3736 or via the Cumberland Council website quoting the reference TTROC/19454."
