A mobile liver screening roadshow is offering free health checks.
The British Liver Trust’s Love Your Liver mobile unit will visit West Cumbria, hired by the NCIC Hepatology Team, and will be stationed in the sports centre car park at 1 Castle Meadows, Whitehaven, on October 7, 2025, from 10am to 4pm.
Visitors will be able to receive a free liver scan and a blood test for viral hepatitis, with on-site advice on healthy living, diet, and exercise.
Pamela Healy, chief executive of the British Liver Trust, said: "One in three of us are at risk of liver disease and the numbers of people being diagnosed have been increasing at an alarming rate.
"Liver damage develops silently with no signs or symptoms and people often don’t realise they have a problem until it is too late.
"Although the liver is remarkably resilient, if left until symptoms appear, the damage is often irreversible."
Liver disease is most commonly caused by alcohol, obesity, and viral hepatitis—factors that can often be prevented.
Other contributing factors include genetics, environmental exposures, autoimmune conditions, prolonged use of certain medications, toxins, and bile duct obstruction.
The British Liver Trust warns that as many as one in ten adults in the North West could be living with undiagnosed liver disease, as early-stage liver damage rarely presents symptoms.
The roadshow supports the British Liver Trust’s Love Your Liver campaign, which promotes three key steps to protect liver health:
Drinking within recommended alcohol limits and taking three consecutive alcohol-free days each week, cutting down on sugar, carbohydrates, and fat while increasing physical activity, and understanding the risk factors for viral hepatitis and getting tested or vaccinated if at risk.
Members of the public will also be able to complete a free online screening test at the mobile unit to assess their risk and receive a non-invasive liver health scan.
