Whitehaven Coastguard take part in missing person training

The Whitehaven Coastguard's training session on Wednesday, August 20, focused on the search for a missing person in the St Bees area.

The scenario suggested a walker, due to complete the Coast to Coast walk at St Bees, was overdue.

Teams were set off to conduct a hub search and hasty route and path search.

Shortly into the exercise, the mock casualty was found on the cliff path at St Bees South Head.

The team practiced giving a medical assessment and treatment, then packaged and transported to a safe helicopter landing site.

Whitehaven Coastguard said: "In a coastal, sea or cliff emergency always 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

"From Rope Rescue (cliff/structure/vessel access etc), Water Rescue, Mud Rescue, casualty evacuation, vessels in distress, Lost and Missing Persons Searches, suspicious items (ordnance/pyrotechnics), Royal Fish (whales, sturgeons, porpoises and dolphins) etc, then we’ve got you covered should you need us."

HM Coastguard is responsible for the initiation and coordination of civil maritime search and rescue within the UK search and rescue region.

This includes the mobilisation, organisation, and tasking of adequate resources to respond to persons in distress at sea.
