Initial works have started on the all-weather pitch in Millom.

Cumberland Council appointed Thomas Armstrong to carry out the refurbishment, which is expected to take around 12 weeks.

The pitch is part of a new leisure complex which is one of four projects that make up the Millom Town Deal.

The town deal secured £20.6m from the UK Government's Towns Fund, alongside a further £8.7m in match funding.

David Savage, chair of the Millom Town Deal Board, said: "We can now look forward to the long-awaited first spade in the ground, which is a significant milestone in transforming plans into real action.

"We have listened to the community feedback and by working in collaboration with our delivery partners we have accelerated this work package so we can bring the 3G pitch back into operational use."

The work on the leisure complex will start once the planning application has been approved.

Councillor Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: "This will be an important step forward for the Millom Town Deal projects.

"It is great to see progress being made.

"Work continues on other parts of the Town Deal projects and momentum continues to build across this transformational programme."
