WHITEHAVEN Town Council's third annual Fireworks Display has an added dimension this year.

The event will take place on December 6 and the team is calling the added feature ‘Light up the Harbour.'

Five minutes before the fireworks start, the mayor will hold a torch aloft and the organisers are hoping that all the guests, children and adults alike will join in with handheld torches or mobile phone torches, pointing them towards them upwards so that photographers can capture the Marina like never before.

The councillors and volunteers will also be distributing hundreds of free glow sticks to enable younger children to participate in the spectacle.

Town mayor, Graham Roberts said: "In effect, what we are hoping to achieve is a gigantic community-led light show to show off not only the beauty of our wonderful harbour in a different light, pardon the pun, but also the spirit of cooperation that people in Whitehaven always show whenever there’s an event on."

Gerard Richardson who helped organise the events with the Town Council: "I think it’s a lovely idea and I'm confident the harbour will be illuminated from end to end.

"The fireworks are our shortest but most popular event of the year with many thousands coming down to see the show and as in previous years, it follows on from the Christmas Traders Market in St Nicholas Gardens."

If you would like to volunteer to help, please email clerk@whitehaventowncouncil.co.uk or seek out the team who will be wearing yellow high-vis jackets and standing near the hub in between the Sugar Tongue and Lime Tongue.
